Microsoft SharePoint Integration with Microsoft Entra B2B - Action required by July 1st, 2025

Microsoft is making a critical change integrating Microsoft SharePoint and OneDrive with Microsoft Entra B2B (Business to Business – Integration) for the “File Sharing” features. This critical change will affect all existing file sharing links for external users who have been granted access to files and folders previously shared by the organization users.

When this will happen and what is the impact?
Effective July 1, 2025, external users will no longer be able to access files, folders, or sites through links that were previously shared by your organization’s users. This change will take effect once Microsoft integrates SharePoint and OneDrive with Entra B2B. Consequently, all external users will lose access to these shared contents.

To restore access, organization users will need to reshare the files, folders, and sites with the external users accordingly. If the original sender is unavailable or does not have the necessary permissions, another authorized user must step in to reshare the content.

Please note that there is no change to the existing file-sharing process. Organization users may continue to share content as they always do.

What will be the experience for the external users trying to access the previously shared links?
External users attempting to use older links will encounter an error message:
"Sorry, something went wrong. This organization has updated its guest access settings. To access this item, please contact the person who shared it with you and ask them to reshare it with you.”

How can Administrators check the current EntraB2B integration?
Administrators can run the following SharePoint PowerShell cmdlet to check the current state of Entra B2B integration in the tenant.

Get-SPOTenant | Select EnableAzureADB2BIntegration

Can Administrators switch the EntraB2B integration to the previous setting?
No, the administrators cannot rollback the changes. Instead, they are advised to prepare the users to reshare the links again with the external users.

What changes will happen in the tenant when EntraB2B integration is enabled and users reshare the links with external users?
Once Microsoft enables the Entra B2B integration and the Organization users reshare the links, the external users are Invited/added as a “Guest account” in the Entra ID directory. The External users invited or added as "Guest accounts" in the Entra ID directory must comply with Microsoft Entra ID access policies, including multifactor authentication and identity protection measures. External users need to meet directory requirements to access the newly shared links.

Conclusion:
Helient strongly recommends customers be aware of the EntraB2B integration with SharePoint and OneDrive and to take necessary actions to minimize the impact to the external users. If you would like more information or assistance, please contact our industry-leading experts at service@helient.com.
