Microsoft Teams Android Devices Transitioning to AOSP Device Management: What You Need to Know

Written by Justin Gorgacz | May 20, 2025 2:29:20 PM

Microsoft will be moving Microsoft Teams Android devices from “Android Device Administrator” to Intune “Android Open Source Project” (AOSP) device management later this year. AOSP device management will provide a more reliable experience, an improved deployment process for administrators, and serve as the foundation for future innovation and richer management capabilities across Teams Rooms, Teams panels, Teams phones, and Teams displays.

Steps for Organizations Using Intune:
Starting on May 15th, 2025 Microsoft Teams Android devices will begin receiving automatic firmware updates to migrate to Intune AOSP device management.

If the organization uses Intune to manage Teams Android devices, administrators will need to create new enrollment profiles and configuration/compliance policies in Intune. Once the AOSP device management-capable firmware is released in the Teams Admin Center, Administrators are required to install the firmware updates for each supported Teams device. This update will automatically unenroll the device from Device Administrator and re-enroll it with AOSP device management using the new enrollment profile.

How to Know When Firmware is Available:
When AOSP device management-compatible firmware is available for your devices, a firmware update will show as available in the Teams Admin Center, labeled as AOSP.

Preparing for the Update:
Initially, the AOSP device management firmware will be available as manual updates, giving organizations time to prepare the prerequisites and test the new firmware on selected devices. It will become a mandatory auto-update only after this manual update period. Your organization can start creating enrollment profiles and AOSP policies today, even before the firmware is generally available.

No Intune Enrollment? No Problem!
If your organization does not currently enroll Teams Android devices in Intune, there's no need to worry. Installing the new device firmware that supports AOSP device management will have no impact. Your devices will receive the new management applications, but no action is required beyond updating the devices to the new firmware once it's released.

Why This Change Matters:
Starting May 15, 2025, Microsoft Teams Android devices will begin receiving automatic firmware updates to migrate to AOSP device management. Without proper configuration, organizations may experience:

  • Device sign-outs and service interruptions during the migration
  • Compliance risks due to outdated enrollment policies
  • Compatibility issues with older Teams app versions or legacy configurations

Key Teams Auto-Update Phases:
Microsoft's auto-update rollout follows a structured schedule in the Teams Admin Center:

  • Validation Phase: Days 0–15
  • General Phase (Default): Days 16–45
  • Final Phase: Days 45–60

Teams Meeting Room Pro License Update Rings:
Organizations using a Teams Meeting Room Pro license can define different update rings for their Microsoft Teams devices:

  • The new AOSP firmware will first be deployed to Teams devices in the Validation ring.
  • After 15 days, the update will be deployed to devices in the General ring.
  • After 45 days, the update will reach devices in the Final ring.

What Organizations Must Do Now:
To avoid operational disruptions, organizations should:

  • Create new enrollment profiles and configure compliance policies in Intune
  • Prepare devices for AOSP-compatible firmware, ensuring seamless re-enrollment
  • Verify prerequisites to prevent potential device sign-outs during migration
  • Monitor manufacturer firmware timelines for compatibility updates

Firmware Availability Across Manufacturers:
When AOSP DM compatible firmware is available for your devices a firmware update will show as available for your Teams Device in Teams Admin Center labeled as AOSP.

Different device manufacturers have unique firmware release schedules:

  • May 15, 2025: AudioCodes, Cisco, DTEN, Jabra
  • May 31, 2025: Crestron, Poly, Yealink (manual updates require prerequisites)
  • June 15, 2025: Logitech, Neat, Poly (Rooms & Panels)

Firmware updates cannot be paused, making pre-migration planning essential to avoid downtime.

Supported Devices for AOSP Migration:
All devices that are currently certified and supported for Microsoft Teams will migrate to AOSP device management, including:

  • Teams Rooms on Android
  • Teams phones
  • Teams panels
  • Teams displays
